Veteran filmmaker James Cameron is not directing the fourth and fifth installments of his popular science-fiction franchise “Avatar”.
In an interview with Empire, the director said that he is developing other projects and would like to focus on them after the third or fourth film in the film series.
The filmmaker is currently awaiting the December premiere of the second installment “Avatar: The Way of Water”.
“‘Avatar’ movies are kind of consuming in themselves. I also have a few other things I’m developing that are exciting.
“I think eventually over time — I don’t know if it’s after three or four — I want to pass the baton to a director that I trust, so I can do some other things that I can.” I’m interested in it too. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron said.
The filmmaker said that the film franchise gave him a canvas to talk about on topics that are important to him in real life – family, sustainability and climate.
Whatever I have to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, about topics that are important to me in real life and in my cinematic life, I can say on this canvas ”
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is set a decade after the events of the first film, which was released in 2009. It centers on the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow them, the lengths they go to to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to survive, and the tragedies they endure.
